My favorite animal

This decision is not as difficult as the other assignments, because I’ve known the answer for many years. Everyone has a favorite animal that perfectly fits with one’s personal characteristics and personality, in my case is the dog. I never had a dog in my childhood, but I always liked them.

Three years ago my big brother began rising “pugs” to sell them and he gave one little girl to my mom. The first impression I had was like: “it is not a dog; it don’t even looks like one”. We called it Almendra, and she was very messy. We couldn’t leave anything important at her sight otherwise it disappeared so I hated her.

As she was growing up, she became very close to us, she never wanted to be apart, so Almendra started to do things like jumping into the bed to just lay down next to us, staying close to our clothes when we were out of the house, and being extremely happy when we arrived. Those actions showed me the animal I wanted ever since I knew dogs existed because I am very close to the people I love too. That way this hated dog became the center of our attention.

I don’t know if I want to work helping them specifically, in fact I’d be happy helping any kind of animals, I love them all, that’s why I’m studying to be a vet. The one thing I don’t like is working in a food industry where animals are the food, it would be very difficult for me treat them as object or machines that have to give me something at any cost.

Places to go

I’m form Rancagua and I like looking for exiting places to visit here in Santiago so this is an interesting assignment. The first thing that took my attention when I got here 3 years ago, because you can’t find it in my hometown, was the number of old buildings. You can walk through Santiago’s main streets and you’ll realize how beautiful this city can be, and I’m not just talking about the historic constructions but the architecture found in the houses built early in the past century. Another point of interest is the “MIM”, which is supposed to be only for children but I have a great time when I go, it’s just you never stop learning and you can see things differently. The first time I went there was in high school and since then I’ve always liked it.

The next place is a little difficult to reach because is in “Cerro San Cristobal” and is the “Japanese garden o jardín japonés”. This place is very unique in the city and I think I’m not lying if I say in the whole country as well; it is a look of this ancient and intriguing culture and you can learn a lot if you stop to appreciate it.

You can’t visit Santiago without living an experience that is characteristic of our culture, which is the passion we have in a football stadium. I don’t know anyone who haven’t had fun going, even if you don’t like this sport. In fact, I have an exchange friend from United States here and she hates sports, but me and my other friends told her she will never regret going, so we did…and now she is asking me when is the next match.

The last place I would recommend is not really a place, it is a special day when all the public buildings are open to people for free, even the ones you cannot visit on a regular day , is “El Día del Patrimonio Cultural”. This is a very special opportunity, because you are able to watch the very best places that Santiago has to offer, like “Club de la Unión”, “Casa de Moneda”, “Palacio Cousiño”, and much more. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has the possibility to spend time in Santiago.

Death penalty

This is a very complex topic, because you are talking about someone’s life. The problem is that this sentence has taken innocent’s life and always will, so it is not easy to be agree with that. If you ask me I’m ok with death penalty and I think this is the only way to stop a person who is really bad and will never change.

The main problem in our society is that criminals are not taking seriously their penalties, because they are extremely soft, so if you kill a man I feel like you will only be at prison for a short amount of time.

There is a group of persons who commit unbelievable brutal crimes, so you question yourself whether is a real person or not. Crimes like rapes, murders (especially when child and pregnant women are the victims) should not be forgiven or forgotten.

In our country that penalty was removed from our constitution in 2001 and nowadays the worst legal punishment is life sentence (“cadena perpetua calificada” is the exact chilean term) and I don’t think that it is appropriated for those criminals, because it is almost never given on courts and you usually watch in the news those same men doing the same crime, and when you ask why they set him free before his original sentence was complicated you find out that he had a remarkable behavior in prison or something like that, which is unacceptable. Another reason for me to say that is because they seem to me like they were enjoying what they’re doing. That way I think death penalty is the only answer on those cases.

The four majors

I know this may sound a little wired, but I’ve always wanted to go to 4 countries: United States of America, Australia, United Kingdom (most specifically, England) and France. You guys must probably be wondering why specifically those 4 different and far away from each other… well, the answer is really simple: in those 4 countries is where the most important world tennis tournaments take place, the four Grand Slams. I would love to be able to watch a live match between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in one of those amazing courts…and Chilean players tooJ.

Beside all that, I think it would be the perfect excuse to see a lot of famous and great places of the world. If I get to go to the US Open, I’ll be in New York and it’s a really interesting place to visit because of the American culture and their way of living. The 40°C of Melbourne doesn’t matter either if I get to know the native people, animals (everyone loves koalas and kangaroos). Who wouldn´t like to go to London to meet the royal family and to go to the Wimbledon tournament, the most traditional of world tennis? I think everybody would love to go! It’s a really important country. I could also go to Abbey Road and see some Strawberry Field (if you are a Beatles fan, you´ll get it) And finally but not less important, the city of lights and love, the place that every romantic or in love people would die to go to, Paris… one on the most wonderful and historic cities in the world, joined with someone really special and living the magic of a great tournament like Roland Garros.

2009

2009 was a very particular year in my life. I experienced new situations and had pretty ugly fights with my family.

That year started very well, I had my girlfriend living in Santiago, I rested a lot on my vacations and was ready for the New Year’s challenges.

Before I go further I have to explain that I lived with my ten year older sister at that time, we were very close and best friend, but somehow she started to treat me very bad and tried to make me seem the bad guy in front of my family. Until 2007 she lived in an apartment bought by my parents for us so we could study in Santiago but I guess she just didn’t want anyone to live with her in what she called it “her apartment”. I think that is why we fought that much and this situation collapsed in 2009 mainly because I never said anything to her before.

After clearing that up I can go on…It was a great year until the second term when all my problems began to affecting me, that way I was never focused on my study, but I really made my best and studied a lot.

I always tried to study a lot but this third year was very difficult and I thought that I didn’t get the grades I deserved so I had to put more effort to it…and there was a point where I couldn’t deal with my problems and my exams at the same time so at the end I ended up failing one subject. I felt very awful but I think it was just meant to be because of the way it happened and I’m happy because I never gave up.

I only hope this year to become a better one

Transantiago

I’m from Rancagua and the first year that transantiago started (2007) was my first year living in the capital. I was very scared because I watched the news with all that people almost hanging of the bus doors. Another thing to worry was that I barely traveled in bus before 2007 (in Rancagua is more common to use “colectivos”, some sort of taxis but with a defined rout).

In spite of all, my experience was not so terrifying because I could get to College very easily. The only problem was that I didn’t (and still don’t) know Santiago so I had to take the same road, otherwise I got lost :s.

But there is something that I still can’t understand which is the rudeness of the people, like when they hit you for accident they never say sorry and that pisses me off every day it happens to me. Also the way you feel on street is wired because even when you are not hurried or late for something you feel the need of always going fast J.

Transantiago is for me a very good initiative but I think the government implemented it in a too short amount of time and that was the reason for the chaos we have now. The funny thing is that within a year of this new “system”, there was an improvement at least in the way I get to the faculty and this year that improvement fell down because now there are new bus stops but unfortunately a few number of buses actually stop :D. that way all the people that’s going to the campus do it in only one or two buses…that’s mad!!…and the time you needed to arrive at the faculty has duplicated since so it’s very bad.

One thing that can be fixed is the number of buses that stop at college because most people using the public transport are students and I always see lots of “203” buses passing in a row but no one really takes them at that hour. I think there is a need of having a better distribution of the buses according to the time they are most used for people.

I just hope that in the future transantiago can be more balanced and the authorities notice where the problems are and we finally have the system we deserve.

Hello

Hey everyone!

This is my Brand new blog. It has mainly two purposes: do my English homework and write about everything that’s going on in my life o Chile that matters to me. I´ll try to mix them both, ´cause I can´t stop doing my homework, but I still want to be writing about things that are important to me.

Well, I hope you´ll have a great time reading me, and please, feel welcome to write any comments you have, like suggestions or critics.
